Filing a Report. The first step in obtaining a police report is to file one after an accident. This can be done by calling the police department post-accident, allowing a law enforcement officer to come to the scene and evaluate the situation and report the pertinent information. This information usually includes the names of those involved in the accident, the date and location of the event, and a reference number to identify your report.

Obtaining the Report. After filing a police report after an accident in Atlanta, you will need to contact the Central Records Unit in order to obtain a copy of your report. There are two ways to do this: in person and online.

  • In Person. You can visit the Central Records Unit located in the Atlanta Public Safety Annex Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 3:30pm in person to obtain a report. Be prepared to pay a small copying fee.
  • Online. You can access an accident report via the Georgia Department of Transportation using www.buycrash.com. There is a $10.00 fee for accessing your report, but you can do so from the comfort of your own home.
