Like many others, 68-year-old Paul Nix of Cumming, Georgia was outside one afternoon last week mowing his lawn. It was something he had probably done dozens, if not hundreds, of times.

Unfortunately for Nix, it would be the last time he would have the opportunity to trim the grass in the front of his home.

While Nix was mowing, 22-year-old Kenneth Johnson was driving a Ford Fusion under the influence of alcohol. Not only was Johnson behind the wheel after drinking; his attention was diverted to his phone as he attempted to send text messages while on the road.

The combination proved to be deadly, as Johnson’s vehicle bowled off of Hopewell Road and ran Nix over in his front yard.

A sobriety test confirmed that Johnson was driving impaired. He was taken to the Forsyth County Jail where he is being held without bond. He’s been charged with first-degree homicide by vehicle, driving under the influence, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, and texting while driving.

“A cell phone was in the debris on the ground outside of the Fusion and was confirmed to belong to Mr. Johnson,” a Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office release stated. “The text screen was active, and it appeared that Mr. Johnson was replying to a text at the time of the crash.” Via Forsythnews.com

Information regarding Johnson’s driving history is unknown at this time.
