Georgia car accident statistics

According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, there were more than 1.9 million traffic accidents in the state between 2017 and 2021. These crashes resulted in 7,785 deaths and nearly 760,000 injuries.

In 2020, accidents involving motor vehicles were the second-leading cause of death and the second-leading cause of hospitalizations and emergency room visits. Even though our state ranks at No. 8 in U.S. population, it came in at No. 4 in the country in traffic accident fatalities – 1,664 people lost their lives on Georgia roads that year alone.

The numbers for the first six months of 2021 were even worse. According to the National Safety Council, 911 motorists died from January to June of that year – a nearly 30% increase from 2020. Those numbers declined slightly in 2022 with 875 fatalities, which is 875 too many.

Atlanta’s busiest highways

A survey from the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) listed the 100 worst areas for bottlenecks in the United States. As part of our community, you might not be surprised to learn that Atlanta’s metro area has eight spots on the list, five of which are in the top 20.

Here’s a quick look at some of those areas and where they ranked on the ATRI list.

No. 4 – I-285 at I-85 North

Tom Moreland Interchange, more commonly referred to as “Spaghetti Junction,” sees nearly 2 million motorists each day. In fact, it’s so busy that it showed up on yet another list of the 10 busiest roads in the U.S.

No. 5 – I-20 at I-285 (West)

This is another incredibly busy – and dangerous – highway. There were more than 3,000 accidents in this area between 2016-2021, and 110 motorists died.

No. 14 – I-75 and I-285 (North)

Also known as the “Cobb Cloverleaf,” the intersection of I-75 and I-285 is close to Trust Park. There are a lot of flyover ramps that can bring traffic to a crawl. Reversible entrance and exit ramps were recently added for I-75 express lanes, making navigating the area even more confusing.

No. 18 – I-285 at Georgia SR 400

busiest road in atlanta ga 400

Georgia 400 is not just among the busiest roads in Atlanta, but also the entire state. Since it lost its designation as a toll road in 2013, Georgia 400 became even more congested.

Other Atlanta roads that made the list include the following:

  • I-20 at I-285 East (No. 21)
  • I-20 at I75/I-85 (No. 45)
  • I-75 at I-675 (No. 52)
  • I-75 at I-85 (No. 62)

How an attorney can help

If you’ve been hurt in an accident while traveling on one of the busiest roads in Atlanta, you’ll need the help of an experienced attorney right away. Your legal representative will get to work investigating the accident and gathering the evidence needed to make your case as strong as possible.

A lawyer can act as a shield between you and the at-fault driver’s insurance company because they’re going to do everything they can to pay as little as possible, even if it means playing games and trickery. If they can get away with paying you nothing, they will.

The insurer will assign an adjuster to your case. This highly trained professional might act sympathetic to your plight, but will want to ask you a few questions just to “get your side of the story.”

They’ll be trying to trip you up or confuse you so that you admit all or partial fault for the accident. They’ll ask misleading, confusing questions that are designed to destroy your case. With an attorney by your side, they won’t be able to do that. If an adjuster contacts you, inform them that you won’t be answering any of their questions and refer them to your attorney.
