Promising Georgia Tech student Alahna Smith was working hard towards achieving her childhood goal of obtaining a degree in electrical engineering, one which she would reach in only a few short years. Smith was part of the premier A. James Clark Scholars Program and had immersed herself in the field through an invaluable internship experience at IvySys Technologies.

After working on a project focused on social media campaigns, Smith said of the internship, “I appreciate how my time at IvySys not only enriched my engineering experience and knowledge but also made me more aware of influencers, so I’m now less susceptible to them.” Via Clarkscholars.Edu

Unfortunately, life can steal the promise of someone with so much potential in little more than an instant. This was the fate that befell Smith on September 4 when she was involved in a fatal car accident.

While driving on Marietta Boulevard, Smith’s SUV collided into a tractor-trailer, causing her to be lodged under the truck. The 22-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

“She worked hard and played hard, and loved her family more than anything,” said her mother Electra Branch. “She was talented, intelligent, driving and loving. She played basketball, lacrosse and was a cheerleader and a dancer.” Via WSBTV.com

The investigation remains ongoing, and information hasn’t been released about the driver of the tractor-trailer.

It’s difficult to read about such gifted young people having their life cut short–our condolences are with Alahna’s family, friends, and peers.
