It’s unfortunate when a community has to grieve the life of a promising teenager, who looked to make his mark in the athletic world and in the classroom. 16-year-old Javier Dodson seemed to have his entire life in front of him to excel in both arenas, until a February 11 car crash changed things forever.

Dodson was behind the wheel of his mother’s 2021 Nissan Altima that evening when he was driving at a high rate of speed on Cannongate Road. Due to this velocity, Dodson was not able to successfully make his way around a curve.

Reports indicate the car crossed the center border and smacked into a tree.

Dodson was rushed to the hospital by EMS workers but died a few days after the accident took place.

He was a student at Northgate High School, where he was a leading member of their football team.

Brandy Benitez Garcia, Dodson’s mother, released a statement addressing the sad turn of events.

“He loves football and his family. He was very outgoing and had a funny personality. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed. #56 strong,” the statement read. Via 11Alive.com

At this point and time, it’s not known whether substances were present in Dodson’s body, or whether they might have played a part in the gruesome outcome.

A friend of the family took the initiative to set up an online fundraiser to help Dodson’s relatives through this very difficult time.

It is going to be challenging for the Northgate football team and the community to move forward, considering that Dodson seemed to love the sport and was a joy to be around.
