Decatur police announced on September 12 that Alrahman Heath, 38, was arrested on charges of a hit-and-run and failure to yield to a pedestrian.

The arrest was made following an incident on the morning of September 11. 69-year-old Decatur resident Jeffery Smith was working as a crossing guard near Decatur High when he was struck by a car at the intersection of South Candler Street and East College Avenue.

A Decatur High student witnessed the crash and was able to give police the details they needed to make an arrest. Smith suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is recovering at home.
